It can have a classy elegant or nostalgic feeling about it. Almost all people except maybe children look better in black and white. That's because monochromatic image evens out the skin tone, which often associated with an attractive and youthfull look. Creating a good black and white photo is not as simple as just desaturating a color image - it's a creative process. Though can't be done with any image, when it works, the black and white always beats its color counterpart.
